Hiring a salesperson vs an AI sales agent

A salesperson and an AI sales agent do different jobs. A worksheet to compare the real cost of hiring vs an agent, and when to hire a person anyway.

The question sounds like “which is cheaper?” It is not. A salesperson and an AI sales agent do different jobs, and pretending otherwise is how companies end up disappointed with both. This guide gives you a worksheet to compare the real cost of each, with no numbers we made up, and a clear rule for when you should hire a person anyway.

Start with the framing. The thelooma Sales Agent works around a company account. It researches promising companies, explains why the timing may matter, maps relevant people, assesses the available contact routes and prepares an individual first approach for review. When a conversation develops, it helps with replies, meetings, proposals and offer drafts. A salesperson makes the contact decision, runs the call, handles objections, negotiates and approves the commercial commitment.

So the real comparison is never “person or agent”. It is one of three setups:

  • A person alone, who also has to do their own prospecting.
  • A person plus an agent, where the agent keeps their calendar full.
  • An agent plus the founder’s time, for companies too small for a sales hire.

Which of the three fits you depends on the numbers below, and on where your deals are actually won.

The cost worksheet

Fill this in with your own figures. We are not putting amounts here on purpose: salaries, contributions and tool costs differ by country, role and seniority, and any number we wrote would be wrong for you. The point is to get every line on one page, because the salary is usually only part of it.

Cost line Salesperson AI sales agent
Gross salary per year your number not applicable
Employer contributions, benefits, equipment your number not applicable
Tools and data (CRM, lead data, email sending, LinkedIn) your number your number: the agent still needs lead data and sending accounts
Months before the first results your number 14 days to live, on a published timeline
Your management time per week your number your number: approval time in the dashboard
Cost when they leave (notice, rehiring, ramping again) your number no rehiring cycle
Build or setup recruiting fees, if any one fixed price, published

Two lines deserve a closer look. First, “months before the first results”. A hire takes weeks to find, then months to ramp: learning the product, building a list, warming up a domain, sending, waiting. Every one of those months is a full salary with no pipeline yet. Second, “cost when they leave”. Sales roles turn over. When a person leaves, the list, the sequences and the knowledge of who said what usually leave with them, and the ramp starts again.

For the platform, the starting prices are public. Solo founder is €1,500 setup plus €150 per month. Teams and companies starts at €4,500 setup plus monthly pricing based on team size, channels and integrations. Both tiers include the full platform, all five agents and unlimited work. Prices exclude VAT, and the pricing page explains what is included.

The time dimension

Cost per month is only half the picture. The other half is when the pipeline starts moving.

With a hire, the clock runs like this: write the job ad, interview, notice period at their old job, onboarding, first list, first sequence, first replies. Count it on a calendar for your own company. Then count what you pay during that stretch.

With the agent, the published 14-day timeline is: a free teardown on day 0 with a written one-page plan, days 1 to 4 to learn your business and connect accounts, days 5 to 9 to build the target lists and sequences and get your approval, and days 10 to 14 to go live. From then on the dashboard shows what was sent, who replied and what is waiting for you.

That does not make the agent better at selling. It makes it faster at starting.

What the agent cannot do

Be clear about this before you decide, because a vendor who is not clear about it is selling you something else.

An AI sales agent does not make calls. It does not negotiate. It does not decide whether a deal is worth taking or whether a customer will be trouble. It does not walk a construction site, sit in a showroom or have a coffee with the buyer. It does not read the room.

It researches, organises the account and prepares the next action. A person reviews first contact, runs the conversation and controls facts, scope, price and commitment. The value is that the salesperson spends less time assembling information and more time making informed decisions with the customer.

Three situations where you should hire a person anyway

  1. Your deals are relationship deals. Long sales cycles, several people on the buyer’s side, site visits, tenders. The agent can open doors, but somebody has to walk through them, and that somebody needs to be there for months.
  2. You already have more inbound leads than you can answer. Your problem is not the top of the funnel. Hire the person, get the replies answered, and think about an agent later for the segments you are not reaching.
  3. The founder is the bottleneck on calls. If every conversation ends up with you, an agent that doubles the conversations doubles your problem. Hire first, then feed them.

In all three cases the agent is still useful, but as the person’s prospecting arm, not instead of them.

Two situations where the agent comes first

  1. Nobody is doing proactive sales work at all. Most companies we talk to are here. Sales happens through referrals and the founder’s network, and “we should approach more of the right companies” has been on the list for a year. A Sales Agent gets the first process running in two weeks, at a fixed price, so you can learn whether researched, individual outreach works before you commit to a salary.
  2. You have a closer with an empty calendar. A good salesperson who has to do their own prospecting spends most of the week not selling. Put the sales agent in front of them and let them do the part you hired them for.

If you are not sure which situation you are in, what an AI sales agent actually does walks through a week of its work in detail.

What to do this week

  • Fill in the worksheet with real figures for a hire in your market. Include the ramp months at full salary.
  • Write down where your last five deals were actually won: the first message, the call, the site visit, or the relationship.
  • Count how many outbound messages your company sent last month. If the answer is close to zero, you are in the first “agent first” situation.
  • If you have a salesperson, ask them what share of their week goes to prospecting versus talking to people who already replied.
  • Decide which of the three setups you are comparing before you look at any price, including ours.

Questions people ask

Can an AI sales agent replace a salesperson?

No. It supports account research, contact-route decisions, outreach drafts, conversations, meetings, proposals and offers. A person still decides who to contact, reviews the first message, runs the call, negotiates and approves the offer.

What does an AI sales agent cost?

At thelooma every tier includes the full platform and all five agents. Solo founder costs €1,500 setup plus €150 per month. Teams and companies starts at €4,500 setup plus monthly pricing based on team size, channels and integrations. Prices exclude VAT.

When should a small company hire a salesperson instead?

When deals need relationships and site visits, when you already have more inbound leads than you can handle, or when the founder is the bottleneck on calls. In those cases the agent feeds the person, it does not replace them.
